Legal
This notice explains what personal data jamesebentier.com collects, why, and what rights you have over it, per Art. 13 GDPR.
The party responsible for this site is identified in the Impressum. For any data protection question, contact jebentier@gmail.com.
When you subscribe to the newsletter I collect your email address and the following consent metadata:
Sign-up uses double opt-in: no email is sent until you confirm your address via the link in the confirmation email. All of this data is stored in our own Postgres database — there is no third-party email service provider. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). Retention: until you unsubscribe or request erasure.
This site records page views in our own Postgres database: the path visited, the referrer, optional campaign parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign), the time recorded (recorded_at), and whether the visit looks human or automated (visitor_type).
This is cookieless and does not identify you individually: there are no cookies, no per-visitor IDs, no raw IP addresses stored, and no third-party analytics trackers. What's collected is minimal, aggregate traffic information.
Legal basis: legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in understanding aggregate site usage, weighed against the minimal, non-identifying nature of the data.
The site stores a single value — theme (your selected color theme) — in your browser's
localStorage. This is strictly functional: it stays on your device, is never
transmitted to the server, isn't shared with anyone, and isn't used for tracking.
Like most web servers, this site generates standard Rails request logs, transiently, for operational and security purposes (e.g. diagnosing errors, detecting abuse). These are not used for analytics or profiling.
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, or erase your data, restrict or object to its processing, request data portability, and withdraw consent at any time (without affecting processing already carried out before the withdrawal). To exercise any of these rights, email jebentier@gmail.com.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The competent authority for this site is the Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit.
