Let the Machine Grind. You Stay Sharp.
AI is taking over the grunt work, so your value is now judgment, and judgment runs on a rested brain. Health and wellness stopped being a nicety and became a competitive input. Offload the grind, not your wellbeing.
Let the Machine Grind. You Stay Sharp.
Here's a take that will annoy the grind-culture crowd: if you're a software engineer and you aren't focused on health and wellness while you let AI do your grunt work, you're behind.
The job changed underneath us. AI is eating the grunt work: the routine implementation, the boilerplate, the first-draft tests, the tickets that used to swallow your afternoon. What's left for a human is judgment: deciding what's worth building, catching the subtly wrong thing the model produced with total confidence, and holding the whole system in your head at once. The routine middle is exactly the part that gets compressed; judgment is the part that doesn't.
And here's what the grind culture never had to reckon with: you can type out code on four hours of sleep, but you cannot make good decisions on four hours of sleep. Judgment runs on a rested, well-regulated brain in a way that raw output never did. Burnout doesn't just slow it down, it corrupts it. A tired mind ships the wrong thing, quickly and confidently.
The math flipped. When output was the job, grinding harder (more hours, less sleep, worse food, no movement) could still net you more of it, on credit you'd repay later. Now that judgment is the job, that same grind directly degrades your only remaining edge. Sleep, exercise, real food, and the time to actually think stopped being personal indulgences. They are the substrate your professional value runs on.
So let the machine do the grinding. Your job is to show up sharp. If you're handing the grunt work to AI and then spending the freed hours grinding yourself into the ground anyway, you automated the wrong half.
